Koh Samui Cost Breakdown 2026: Realistic Budget Tiers

Koh Samui has earned a reputation as a destination where you can spend almost nothing or quite a lot — and where the difference is genuinely visible. Unlike Bali, where the gap between budget and luxury is narrowing, Samui still has clear tiers, and choosing the right one matters more here than almost anywhere else in Thailand.

This guide is built from real 2026 numbers — what our team actually pays, what guests actually spend, and where the surprises tend to hide. All prices are in Thai baht (THB); rough EUR equivalents use a working rate of 36 THB to the euro.

    The three honest budget tiers

Most Koh Samui visitors fall into one of three brackets. Knowing yours upfront makes every other decision easier.

    Mid-range comfort — 8,000–18,000 THB per day

A comfortable private villa for a couple or small family, eating well at local Thai restaurants, occasional driver hire, and one or two paid activities. This is where most independent travellers sit, and where Samui delivers exceptional value compared to European destinations.

Premium — 25,000–60,000 THB per day

A four- to six-bedroom villa with full staff, daily restaurant meals at the better venues, a dedicated driver, in-villa massage and spa, and curated experiences. Group trips of six to ten guests often land here on a per-villa basis while remaining excellent per-person value.

Ultra-luxury — 80,000 THB and up per day

Signature beachfront estates, private chef every meal, helicopter transfers, yacht charters, and full concierge orchestration. This is what defines the upper end of Samui's villa market in 2026 — and the reason properties like our Sky Dream Villa and the wider luxury villa market continue to attract international buyers.

Villa rates: the largest single line item

Villa pricing varies more on Koh Samui than any other category — and it's where good advice pays for itself.

Villa tierBedroomsLow season (THB/night)High season (THB/night)
    Boutique private villa2–38,000–18,00014,000–30,000

High season runs roughly 20 December – 10 January (peak), then mid-January through March, plus July and August. Low season (May, June, September, October) typically prices 25–40% lower — and weather is often better than expected, especially May and June.

    Food and drink

Samui's food scene runs from 60-baht street stalls to fine dining at international standards. The realistic range:

    • Local Thai restaurants: 80–250 THB per person per meal
    • Mid-range Western or fusion: 400–900 THB per person
    • Fine dining: 1,500–4,000 THB per person, often with corkage rather than wine markup
    • Beach club lunch: 800–2,000 THB per person including a drink
    • Private chef in villa: 2,500–4,000 THB chef fee plus groceries at cost (typically 600–1,200 THB per person for a multi-course dinner)

Bophut's Fisherman's Village and the better restaurants of Choeng Mon offer the strongest mid-tier value. Chaweng has the widest spread, including Samui's most expensive restaurants.

Wine is the one consistently expensive category — import duties push a decent bottle to 1,500–2,500 THB at restaurants. Spirits and Thai beer remain very reasonable.

    Transport

Getting around Samui is straightforward but rarely as cheap as it first appears. Realistic 2026 figures:

    • Airport transfer (private car): 600–1,500 THB depending on villa location
    • Private driver, full day: 1,800–2,800 THB (8–10 hours, fuel included)
    • Private driver, half day: 1,000–1,500 THB
    • Songthaew shared taxi: 50–100 THB per short hop; agree the price first
    • Rental car: 1,000–1,800 THB per day for a small SUV with insurance
    • Scooter: 200–400 THB per day — but read our getting around guide on safety before deciding

For most stays of a week or more, a private driver booked for two or three half-days plus walking from the villa works out cheaper, safer, and far less stressful than a daily rental.

    Activities and experiences

A realistic per-person budget for the most popular paid activities:

    • Snorkelling day trip to Koh Tao or Ang Thong: 2,500–4,500 THB
    • Private speedboat charter: 25,000–55,000 THB per day for up to 8 guests
    • Elephant sanctuary visit (ethical, half-day): 2,500–3,500 THB per adult
    • Spa treatment, 90 minutes: 1,500–4,500 THB
    • In-villa massage: 800–1,400 THB per hour
    • Muay Thai class: 400–600 THB drop-in
    • Cooking class: 1,500–2,500 THB
    • Yoga class, drop-in: 400–700 THB

Two or three curated activities typically deliver more memorable trips than a packed schedule. Many guests do one boat day, one wellness day, and one cultural visit — and spend the rest of the week at the villa.

    Concierge and villa services

This is the area where 2026 looks different from 2020. Concierge services have professionalised significantly, and the better villas now include — or coordinate at clearly published rates — services that used to be improvised.

Typical add-ons (often coordinated through your villa manager rather than billed separately by us):

    • Pre-arrival grocery shopping: cost of groceries plus 10–15% service or a flat 800–1,500 THB fee
    • Daily housekeeping: usually included; deep clean for longer stays 1,500–3,000 THB
    • Babysitting: 350–600 THB per hour, often with a 4-hour minimum
    • Personal trainer or yoga at villa: 1,500–2,500 THB per session
    • Restaurant reservations and event tickets: typically complimentary
    • Airport meet-and-greet with name board: 500–1,000 THB

At Mykeythai we coordinate these through the on-site villa team rather than running a separate concierge business — which keeps costs transparent and avoids the layered markups common at OTA-managed properties.

    Hidden costs to budget for

The items guests most often forget:

    1. Refundable security deposit — 20,000–50,000 THB held against accidental damage, returned within 7 days of checkout
    2. Tourist tax — Thailand's long-discussed 300 THB arrival fee may take effect in 2026; budget for it
    3. Travel insurance with medical coverage — non-negotiable; Bangkok Hospital Samui is excellent but private
    4. Sunblock and basic toiletries — significantly more expensive on the island than at home
    5. ATM fees — 220 THB per foreign-card withdrawal
    6. 7% VAT — applied to professional services (private chefs, drivers booked through reputable agencies, spa packages)
    7. Gratuities — see the FAQ below; budget 5–10% of villa rate at the upper tier

    Sample weekly budgets

Realistic all-in totals for a 7-night stay, excluding international flights:

Couple, mid-range villa, relaxed pace — 95,000–135,000 THB (≈ 2,650–3,750 EUR) 4-bed villa shoulder season, daily restaurant meals, two activities, three days with a driver.

Family of four, premium villa, active week — 220,000–340,000 THB (≈ 6,100–9,400 EUR) 5-bed villa with staff, mix of villa dining and restaurants, snorkel trip, elephant sanctuary, spa days.

Group of eight, signature estate, high season — 550,000–950,000 THB (≈ 15,300–26,400 EUR) Beachfront estate with full team, private chef most evenings, yacht day, multiple spa sessions, full driver coverage.

In every case the villa accounts for 55–75% of the total — which is exactly why getting that decision right is the highest-leverage choice in your trip planning.

    Часто задаваемые вопросы

For a couple staying in a comfortable mid-range villa with daily meals out, a private driver for half the trip, and two or three activities, expect roughly 90,000–140,000 THB per week (≈ 2,500–3,900 EUR), excluding flights. Premium villa stays push this to 200,000–400,000 THB; ultra-luxury easily exceeds 800,000 THB.

Yes — modestly. Most villas have raised rates 5–10% versus 2024, driven by the new Suratthani–Donsak expressway, the upcoming bridge project, and stronger high-season demand. Low-season rates (May, June, September, October) remain excellent value and are often 30–40% below peak.

The most commonly forgotten items are: villa security deposits (typically 20,000–50,000 THB, refunded), electricity above an included cap (rare but possible at large villas with full air-conditioning use), pre-arrival grocery shopping, gratuities for villa staff (5–10% of stay value is customary at the upper tier), and 7% VAT on professional services like private chefs and drivers.

For 1–2 people, eating out at local Thai restaurants is often cheaper than cooking — meals run 80–250 THB per person. For groups of 4 or more, hiring a private chef for one or two evenings (typically 2,500–4,000 THB plus groceries at cost) is excellent value and usually cheaper than a comparable restaurant outing.

Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. Restaurants: round up or 10% if no service charge. Drivers: 100–200 THB per day. Spa therapists: 100–300 THB. Villa staff at the end of a stay: roughly 5–10% of the total villa rate, distributed among the team — your villa manager can advise on local custom.

Most restaurants, hotels, and reputable shops accept Visa and Mastercard. American Express is less common. Local markets, songthaew taxis, smaller cafés, and Muay Thai gyms are cash-only. ATMs are widely available but charge a 220 THB foreign-card fee, so withdrawing larger amounts less frequently is more efficient.
