Yacht Charter on Koh Samui: Sail & Motor Boat Guide
There are few better ways to understand Koh Samui than from the water. The island sits in a sheltered corner of the Gulf of Thailand, ringed by smaller islands, hidden coves and the limestone drama of Ang Thong Marine Park — all within a comfortable day's range under sail or under power.
A private yacht charter turns that geography into your itinerary. You choose the bay for lunch, the snorkeling spot for the afternoon, and whether the day ends with a sundowner at anchor or a long downwind run back to Bophut. This guide covers what's actually available on Samui in 2026 — sailing and motor — what it costs, and how to match the right boat to the right kind of day.
Why Charter a Yacht on Koh Samui
Most visitors see Samui from the road. Charter a boat for a day and the island reorganises itself: the beaches become anchorages, the headlands become navigation marks, and the neighbouring islands — Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, the Ang Thong archipelago — slide into reach.
The water itself does most of the work. The Gulf is shallow, sheltered and warm year-round, with short, manageable seas and good visibility for swimming and snorkeling. Group day-tour boats cover the headline sights, but a private charter buys you something the tour boats cannot: time at anchor without a schedule, and the freedom to skip the crowded stops entirely.
Sail or Motor — Choosing the Right Boat
The two formats answer different questions.
Sailing Catamarans
By far the most popular charter format on Samui. Catamarans of 40–60 ft offer a stable, shaded platform, large trampolines forward, an open saloon, and easy access to the water from low transoms. Even under power they're comfortable, and when the south-westerly fills in they sail well enough to make the day feel like genuine sailing rather than a slow motor.
Best for families, mixed groups, and anyone whose priority is a relaxed day on the water rather than performance sailing.
Monohulls
If you actually want to sail — heel angle, helm time, a proper trimmed beat — a crewed monohull in the 40–50 ft range is the right choice. The fleet on Samui is smaller than the catamaran fleet, but several operators keep cruising monohulls available for half-day, full-day and overnight charters. Expect a more involved day and, in the right breeze, a faster passage to Koh Phangan.
Motor Yachts
A motor yacht buys you range and pace. Where a sailing catamaran might reach the Five Islands and one anchorage on Koh Phangan in a day, a 60–80 ft motor yacht comfortably covers Ang Thong Marine Park and back with hours of swim time built in. They're also the natural choice for celebrations — birthdays, anniversaries, small weddings — where a stable platform, full crew, chef and a proper sound system matter more than time under sail.
The trade-off is fuel. Motor yachts run a fuel surcharge that's quoted separately, and on a long Ang Thong day it can be a meaningful share of the total.
What a Day on Board Actually Looks Like
A typical full-day private charter from Bophut or Big Buddha Pier looks roughly like this:
- 09:00 — Pier transfer from your villa, tender out to the yacht, briefing, depart.
- 10:30 — First anchorage on the south or west coast of Koh Phangan, or one of the Five Islands. Swim, snorkel, paddleboards in the water.
- 13:00 — Lunch on board at anchor. Most operators include a Thai or Mediterranean menu; private chef upgrades are available on the larger yachts.
- 15:00 — Second stop. Often a quieter bay for a longer swim and a slower hour on deck.
- 17:30 — Sundowner under sail (or at anchor) on the way back to Samui.
- 18:30 — Return to pier, transfer back to your villa.
Half-day charters compress this into a sunset sail or a morning swim-and-snorkel loop. Overnight charters extend it — most commonly with a night at anchor in Ang Thong or off the west coast of Koh Phangan.
Established Charter Operators on Koh Samui
These are the operators we know personally and recommend to villa guests. All are Samui-based, fully insured and have been running on the island for years.
Sailing Charters
- Samui Ocean Sports & Yacht Charter — the longest-running sailing operation on the island. Small fleet of catamarans and monohulls including the cruising catamaran _Dreamcatcher_ and the 44 ft _Geronimo_. Half-day, full-day and overnight charters out of Bophut.
- Boutique Yachting — operating the 30 m sailing yacht _S/Y Naga_ with full crew, four cabins and a chef on board. The right call for a high-end full-day Ang Thong cruise or a private celebration under sail.
- Samui Island Explorer — sailing yacht charters in half-day, full-day, sunset and overnight formats, including multi-day itineraries to Koh Phangan and Ang Thong Marine Park.
Motor Yacht & Speedboat Charters
- Samui Boat Charter — long-running local operator with a range of speedboats and motor yachts for day trips to Ang Thong, the Five Islands and Koh Phangan. Pier transfers from Bang Rak.
- Lucky Charter Samui — speedboat and motor cruiser charters with a focus on Ang Thong Marine Park, sunset trips and private island-hopping itineraries.
- Blue Stars Kayaking & Boat Charter — a Samui institution for Ang Thong day trips and private boat charters, with both shared tours and private hires available.
If you'd rather we handle the introduction, our villa team has direct lines into all of these operators and can match boat, crew and itinerary to your group.
Routes Worth Knowing
- Koh Phangan west coast — the default day-charter destination. Mae Haad, Haad Salad and the smaller bays north of Thong Sala offer easy anchorages, sand bottoms and good snorkeling at Koh Ma.
- The Five Islands (Koh Si Ha) — a short hop off Samui's west coast. Best for a half-day, with limestone scenery that previews Ang Thong in miniature.
- Ang Thong Marine Park — 42 limestone islands roughly 90 minutes by motor yacht from Samui. National park fees apply, and the park typically closes during the monsoon (November to mid-December). A full-day motor yacht charter is the most comfortable way to see it.
- Koh Tao — a longer reach, usually an overnight charter. World-class diving and snorkeling, but not realistic as a day trip under sail.
What Charters Typically Cost
Prices vary by season, boat size and crew, but the 2026 range on Samui looks roughly like this:
| Charter type | Indicative day rate (THB) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shared sailing day trip | 3,500–4,500 per person | Set itinerary, mixed group |
| Private sailing cat 40–50 ft | 45,000–70,000 | Crew, lunch, snorkel gear included |
| Private sailing cat 55–62 ft | 70,000–110,000 | Larger groups, more deck space |
| Crewed motor yacht 60–80 ft | 90,000–250,000 | Plus fuel surcharge |
| Luxury sailing yacht (e.g. _S/Y Naga_ class) | 150,000+ | Chef on board, full crew |
Add national park fees for Ang Thong (typically 300 THB per adult, 150 THB per child) and a fuel surcharge for motor yachts. Tipping the crew at the end of the day is customary.
When to Sail
Samui's sailing season runs from roughly January through September, with two distinct moods:
- February to April — light winds, glassy mornings, hot afternoons. The motor yacht and catamaran season. Best for families and longer swim stops.
- May to September — south-westerly monsoon, steady 10–18 knot breezes, occasional short squalls. The sailing season proper. This is also when the Samui Regatta takes over the bay off Chaweng for a week each May.
October to mid-December is the wet season. Most charters reduce their schedules and Ang Thong Marine Park closes for part of this window. It's not the time to plan a charter-driven trip.
Booking Through Your Villa
Most of the established charter operators on Samui — sailing and motor — work directly with villa teams. Booking through your villa rather than walking the pier usually means better pricing on private days, the right boat matched to your group, and a coordinated start: pier transfer from the villa, provisioning loaded the night before, and dietary requirements passed straight to the on-board chef.
For families staying somewhere like Villa Ann or Villa Orise, the practical advantage is timing — the difference between a relaxed 09:00 departure and a chaotic scramble at the pier. For larger groups at a property such as Paradise Villa Elysium, the villa team can also coordinate a private chef ashore for the evening, so the charter day flows naturally into dinner back at the villa.
A Few Honest Notes
- Sea sickness is rare on the Gulf — short seas, sheltered water — but worth a tablet for anyone prone to it.
- Sun on the water is stronger than it feels. Reef-safe sunscreen, a long-sleeve rash top and a hat are not optional.
- Group size matters more than boat size: A 50 ft catamaran is comfortable for eight, tight for twelve. Ask your villa team to size honestly.
- "Sunset cruise" on a powered boat is not the same as a sundowner under sail. If the sail itself matters to you, say so when you inquire.
Samui rewards a day on the water more than most island destinations of its size. Match the boat to the day you actually want — a quiet snorkel loop, a proper sail, or a full-crew motor yacht for a celebration — and the island opens up in a way the road simply cannot show you.
Часто задаваемые вопросы
Half-day shared sailing trips start around 3,500–4,500 THB per person. Private full-day sailing catamarans range from roughly 45,000 to 90,000 THB, and crewed motor yachts from about 60,000 THB for a day to several hundred thousand THB for larger yachts with chef and full crew. Fuel surcharges and national park fees are usually added on top.
January to September offers the most reliable conditions. The south-westerly monsoon (May–September) brings steady 10–18 knot winds — ideal for sailing — while February to April is calmer and warmer, better suited to motor yachts and longer cruising days. October to mid-December is the wet season and many operators reduce their schedules.
Choose a sailing catamaran for stability, shade and a slower, quieter day on the water. Pick a monohull if you actually want to sail. A motor yacht makes sense when you want to cover more ground in a day, reach Ang Thong Marine Park comfortably, or host a celebration with a full crew and chef on board.
Most sailing charters leave from Bophut, Big Buddha Pier or Chaweng Beach, while larger motor yachts typically use the deeper berths at Bang Rak (Big Buddha) Pier. Your villa team can arrange pier transfers and confirm the most convenient departure point for your itinerary.
Yes. Sailing catamarans are particularly family-friendly thanks to their stable platform, shaded saloon and easy swim access. Operators carry life jackets in children's sizes, and the calm waters between Samui, Koh Phangan and the Five Islands suit families well — especially in the February–April window.
