5 Hidden Beaches in Koh Samui Only Locals Know About

Koh Samui is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand, but most visitors never venture beyond the well-known stretches of Chaweng and Lamai. The island's quieter coastlines hold genuinely spectacular hidden beaches — places where the sand is pristine, the water crystal clear, and the only sound is the rustle of coconut palms.

We have spent years exploring every cove, headland, and fishing village on Koh Samui. These five hidden beaches represent our personal favourites — the places we take friends and family when they visit.

1. Silver Beach (Thong Ta Khian)

Silver Beach sits tucked between Lamai and Chaweng Noi, accessible via a narrow road winding through coconut groves. Despite being just minutes from Koh Samui's busiest tourist areas, it feels like a different world entirely.

The water here is remarkably clear — often compared to the Maldives by first-time visitors. A granite headland shelters the cove, creating calm conditions ideal for snorkelling directly from shore. We've spotted triggerfish, parrotfish, and even small reef sharks in the shallow waters around the rocks. Guests at Sky Dream Villa in nearby Chaweng Noi can reach Silver Beach in just a few minutes — making it an effortless morning excursion.

• Getting there: Turn off the main ring road between Chaweng Noi and Lamai. A small sign marks the turnoff — look for the narrow lane between two resorts.

A handful of small beachside restaurants serve excellent fresh seafood, grilled to order. We particularly love the papaya salad and whole grilled sea bass at the family-run stall on the northern end.

2. Lipa Noi

On the west coast of Koh Samui, Lipa Noi is the island's undisputed sunset capital. This long, shallow beach stretches for nearly two kilometres, with warm sand that stays ankle-deep in water for a hundred metres offshore — making it exceptionally safe for families with young children.

The views from Lipa Noi are extraordinary. On clear evenings, the sun sets directly behind the limestone peaks of Ang Thong National Marine Park, creating silhouettes that feel almost theatrical. We have watched hundreds of sunsets from this beach, and no two are alike.

• Atmosphere: Quiet, unhurried, wonderfully local. A few beach bars serve cold drinks and simple Thai food.
• Best for: Families, couples, sunset photographers, and anyone seeking peace.

Lipa Noi is also the departure point for ferries to Koh Phangan, making it convenient for guests planning a Full Moon Party day trip.

3. Taling Ngam

Taling Ngam occupies the southwest corner of Koh Samui, where dramatic rocky outcrops meet coconut palm-lined shores. The coastline here is rugged and photogenic, with views across to the mystical Five Islands — a cluster of uninhabited islets that glow gold in the afternoon light.

This is arguably the most scenic stretch of coast on the entire island. We have personally visited every beach on Koh Samui, and Taling Ngam consistently ranks as our most recommended for guests who value natural beauty over convenience.

• Landscape: Rocky headlands, hidden coves, coconut groves, and panoramic Gulf views.
• Swimming: Best at high tide, when small sandy bays between the rocks fill with calm, warm water.
• Dining: The clifftop restaurants in this area serve some of the island's finest Thai cuisine with jaw-dropping ocean views.

The shallow, calm water makes it ideal for swimming year-round, and the beach's eastern orientation means glorious morning sunshine.

The village itself is worth exploring. Small restaurants, art galleries, and local shops line the main street, and the Friday night walking market is a highlight — far more authentic than the tourist-oriented markets in Chaweng.

• Character: Village-feel, friendly, unhurried. Popular with European expats and long-stay visitors.
• Activities: Kayaking, paddleboarding, morning yoga on the beach, and excellent snorkelling around the rocky headlands at either end of the bay.

On the quieter southern coast, Ban Tai is a true fisherman's beach where traditional long-tail boats line the shore and the morning catch is sold directly from the boats. This is authentic Koh Samui at its most genuine — the island as it existed before tourism transformed the northern beaches.

The beach itself is modest — more coral sand than powder-soft white — but the atmosphere is extraordinary. We come here for the food: roadside stalls serving what we believe is the best pad thai on the island, alongside fresh coconut ice cream and grilled satay.

• Morning market: Arrives around 6:30 am daily. Fresh fish, tropical fruit, coconut pancakes, and strong Thai coffee.
• Photography: The long-tail boats against the morning sky create some of the island's most iconic images.
• Cultural interest: Several small temples and a vibrant local community that welcomes visitors warmly.

Ban Tai connects to the island's interior trails, making it a natural starting point for exploring Koh Samui's waterfalls, viewpoints, and jungle paths.

Practical Tips for Beach-Hopping on Koh Samui
