Koh Samui and the Maldives sit in the same emotional category for a lot of travellers — the shortlist for a proper, once-a-year, "we want it to feel like a real holiday" trip. On paper they look similar: warm water, palm trees, a certain quality of light. On the ground they are almost opposite propositions, and choosing between them well is really a question of what kind of luxury you actually want.
This is a candid comparison from a Koh Samui perspective. We know the island because we live and work here; we have visited the Maldives too, and we will happily send guests there when it is the better fit. The fundamental difference
A Maldives holiday is, almost by definition, a resort holiday. You fly into Malé, transfer by seaplane or speedboat to a single small island, and spend your entire trip on that one island. The room — often an overwater villa with a private plunge pool and direct lagoon access — is the whole experience. You do not leave.
A Koh Samui holiday is a villa holiday on a real, inhabited island. You fly in, drive twenty minutes to a private villa with grounds, staff and a swimming pool, and then use that villa as a base to move around: beaches, restaurants, temples, viewpoints, day trips to the neighbouring islands. The villa is the anchor; the island is the experience.
Both can feel luxurious. They just feel luxurious in very different ways.
Accommodation, honestly compared
Maldives: the overwater room as the experience
In the Maldives, the accommodation is the reason you came. An overwater villa with glass floor panels, a private deck, a plunge pool, uninterrupted lagoon view — this is a specific and beautiful format, and no beach villa on Koh Samui can replicate it. If that image is what you have been picturing for years, Koh Samui will not deliver it.
Koh Samui: a private house with staff
On Koh Samui, the accommodation is a private house rather than a hotel room. A well-chosen villa here means five to nine bedrooms, a large infinity pool, a full kitchen, indoor and outdoor living rooms, a housekeeping team and often a chef available on request. Properties like Villa Osho, Paradise Villa Elysium and Sky Dream Villa sit on their own grounds with sea views and sleep entire families or groups of friends under one roof — a format that essentially does not exist in the Maldives at the same price. Maldives: pricing per room, per couple
A five-night Maldives trip for two, in a mid-tier overwater villa with half board and seaplane transfers, realistically lands between 10,000 and 20,000 USD. Add a butler-tier property and it doubles. Add children and it becomes noticeably harder, because most rooms sleep two.
Koh Samui: pricing per villa, per group
A five-night Koh Samui trip in one of our larger villas, sleeping ten people with private pool, full staff, breakfast prepared in-house and a private chef for two dinners, typically lands between 8,000 and 20,000 USD for the entire group. Neither destination is cheap. But the value per person diverges sharply once you are travelling as more than a couple.
Landscape and beaches
Maldives: a single, perfect image
On pure postcard terms, the Maldives wins. The atolls are extraordinary — bright white sand, shallow turquoise lagoons, a house reef a few metres from the deck. If your definition of a great holiday is "walk from the room into water like a swimming pool", the Maldives is exactly built for that.
Koh Samui: a landscape with chapters
Koh Samui's landscape is more varied and, arguably, more interesting over time. The north coast around Bophut and Choeng Mon has calm, family-friendly bays. Chaweng and Lamai are longer stretches with a more social feel. Inland, the island rises into jungle-covered hills with waterfalls, viewpoints and quiet temples. Food
This is where Koh Samui pulls decisively ahead. The Maldives, by geography, has almost everything imported. Resort food is generally good but rarely memorable, and dining outside the resort is not really an option.
Koh Samui has a full Thai food culture on the doorstep: markets, family-run restaurants, beachfront kitchens, and a growing scene of high-end dining. Add a private chef in the villa — genuinely affordable here — and you can eat Thai one night, Mediterranean the next, and a full seafood barbecue on the terrace on the third. Over a two-week stay, this difference is significant.
Privacy and social feel
Both destinations can be intensely private. In the Maldives, privacy comes from being physically isolated on a resort island. In Koh Samui, privacy comes from the villa itself — high walls, private grounds, staff who arrive and disappear on rhythm.
The trade-off: in the Maldives you are alone but restricted; in Koh Samui you are private but free to leave. Neither is better in the abstract. Access and transfers

The Maldives requires a flight into Malé, followed by a seaplane or speedboat to the resort. Seaplanes only operate in daylight, which regularly adds a Malé hotel night to an itinerary if you land late. For a family arriving from Europe with young children, this second leg matters more than it sounds.
Weather
Both destinations share a broadly similar tropical rhythm, but the wet windows do not align perfectly. Koh Samui's driest, calmest months are February and March, with a secondary sweet spot around June to August; October and November are the wet ones we quietly steer people away from. If you can only travel in October or November, the Maldives is often the safer bet. For most other months, Koh Samui is comfortably in season.
