Best Time to Visit Koh Samui: A Month-by-Month Guide

Koh Samui is one of Thailand's most popular island destinations, and for good reason. With warm temperatures year-round, stunning beaches, and a thriving villa culture, the island welcomes visitors in every season. But choosing the right month can significantly shape your experience — from the activities available to the rates you'll pay.

We have personally lived and worked on Koh Samui for over a decade, and we know the island's rhythms intimately. This guide shares everything we've learned about timing your visit for the best possible holiday.

    Understanding Koh Samui's Climate

Unlike Phuket and the Andaman coast, Koh Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand and follows a different weather pattern. The island's peak dry season runs from December through April, while the wettest months fall in October and November. Temperatures remain consistently warm, hovering between 25 °C and 34 °C throughout the year.

It's important to note that Koh Samui rarely experiences the prolonged, all-day rain that some travellers fear. Even during the wet season, mornings are often sunny, with showers arriving in short, intense bursts — usually in the late afternoon or evening.

The Dry Season: December to April

This is Koh Samui's most popular period, and the weather is exceptional. Expect clear blue skies, calm seas ideal for snorkelling around Ang Thong Marine Park, and warm evenings perfect for open-air dining at your private villa.

    • December–January: Peak season with the best weather and highest demand. Christmas and New Year villa bookings fill quickly — we recommend reserving at least three months ahead.
    • February–March: Arguably the finest months on the island. Humidity drops, the Gulf is glass-calm, and the island's lush vegetation is at its greenest following the rains.
    • April: Songkran (Thai New Year) brings festive energy to the island. Temperatures peak but the sea remains inviting. An ideal month for families seeking holiday-season energy without the Christmas premium.

Many of our guests who visit during the dry season choose villas with panoramic ocean views, like Sky Dream Villa, to make the most of the endless sunshine and spectacular sunsets.

The Shoulder Season: May to June

This is our favourite time of year — and a well-kept secret among repeat visitors. May and June deliver warm, mostly dry days with occasional afternoon showers that cool the air beautifully. The island is noticeably quieter, villa rates drop significantly, and restaurants and beaches feel wonderfully spacious.

    • Lower rates on luxury villas — often 20–30 % less than peak season
    • Fewer tourists at popular attractions like Big Buddha and Hin Ta Hin Yai rocks
    • Excellent conditions for exploring Koh Samui's hidden beaches
    • Lush, vibrant green landscapes that photographers adore

For couples and honeymooners, the shoulder season offers a rare combination of privacy, value, and beautiful weather. Properties like Paradise Villa Eden in Chaweng Noi — with its lush tropical garden and tranquil setting — are particularly appealing during these quieter months. Browse our villa collection for intimate settings surrounded by tropical gardens.

The Southwest Monsoon: July to September

July through September brings the southwest monsoon, though Koh Samui is partially shielded by the Thai mainland. The result is a season of sunny mornings and scattered evening showers — far from the "rainy season" stereotype that deters some travellers.

    This period is ideal for:

    • Exploring inland attractions: waterfalls like Na Muang, the Secret Buddha Garden, and Samui's lush interior hiking trails
    • Diving at Sail Rock and Koh Tao, where visibility often reaches 20+ metres
    • Indulging in the island's thriving food scene, from night markets to fine-dining Thai fusion
    • Enjoying wellness retreats and spa experiences at your private villa

Villa rates during these months offer outstanding value, and the island's atmosphere feels authentically Thai — free from the tourist-season rush. Guests at Villa Orise in Chaweng Noi particularly enjoy this period, when the villa's serene garden setting and lush surroundings feel like a private retreat.

The Wet Season: October to November

October and November are the wettest months, with heavier and more sustained rainfall. Seas can be rougher, and some island-hopping excursions may be suspended. However, this season has its own compelling appeal.

We have personally witnessed some of Koh Samui's most dramatic sunsets during October — when monsoon clouds create extraordinary colours across the Gulf. The landscape turns an almost impossibly vivid green, and the island feels intimate and romantic.

    • Significant savings on villa rentals — often the lowest rates of the year
    • Ideal for couples seeking absolute privacy and romance
    • Superb conditions for reading, relaxing, and enjoying in-villa spa treatments
    • The island's waterfalls are at their most impressive after heavy rain

Several of our guests specifically choose the wet season for extended stays of two to four weeks, combining work-from-villa productivity with afternoon rain showers that make curling up on a day bed with a book feel gloriously indulgent.
