Where to Stay on Koh Samui: A Neighbourhood Guide for Villa Guests

Choosing the right part of Koh Samui can transform a good holiday into an unforgettable one. The island is compact — you can drive the entire ring road in under 90 minutes — but each area has its own distinct character, pace, and appeal. Where you stay shapes everything: the views from your terrace, the restaurants within reach, and how your mornings begin.

We have lived and worked on Koh Samui for years, personally inspecting every villa in our collection. This guide shares our honest perspective on each part of the island, so you can make an informed choice before booking.

The East Coast: The Heart of Villa Living

The eastern coastline between Lamai and Chaweng is where the majority of Koh Samui's finest luxury villas are located — and for good reason. The hills rising behind these beaches offer elevated plots with panoramic Gulf views, morning sunrise over the water, and proximity to the island's best infrastructure.

This stretch of coast combines the best of both worlds: privacy and seclusion in hillside villa compounds, with restaurants, beach clubs, supermarkets, and medical facilities just minutes away. It is, in our experience, the ideal base for most visitors. If you're weighing up whether to book a resort villa or a standalone private villa, our comparison of luxury villa resorts and private villas breaks down the key differences.

    Chaweng Noi

Chaweng Noi sits at the southern end of Chaweng Beach, separated from the busier northern stretch by a rocky headland. The area feels noticeably calmer than central Chaweng while remaining within easy reach of everything the east coast offers.

    • Character: Upscale, residential, quieter than Chaweng proper. Popular with families and couples seeking convenience without the noise.
    • Beaches: Chaweng Noi beach is one of the island's most beautiful — soft white sand, calm turquoise water, and a fraction of the crowds found further north.
    • Dining: Several excellent restaurants are within walking distance, including beachfront seafood spots and international cuisine. Central Festival Samui mall is a ten-minute drive.
    • Villas: The hillside above Chaweng Noi hosts some of the island's most impressive villa estates, with sweeping ocean views and lush tropical gardens.

Chaweng Noi is our most-recommended area for first-time visitors who want easy access to beaches, dining, and nightlife without being in the thick of it.

    Chaweng

Central Chaweng is Koh Samui's most vibrant and developed area. The main beach road is lined with restaurants, bars, tailors, and souvenir shops. Chaweng Beach itself is a magnificent three-kilometre stretch of white sand — arguably the island's finest swimming beach.

    • Character: Lively, cosmopolitan, the closest thing Koh Samui has to a town centre. Walking Street comes alive after dark with bars, live music, and night markets.
    • Best for: Younger travellers, groups of friends, and anyone who wants nightlife and dining variety on their doorstep.
    • Considerations: Central Chaweng can feel busy and commercial compared to the rest of the island. Traffic around the beach road is heavy during peak season. Most luxury villas are set back in the hills rather than on the beach itself.

If you want the energy of a bustling beach resort combined with the privacy of a hillside villa, Chaweng delivers. But if tranquillity is your priority, consider Chaweng Noi or Lamai instead.

    Lamai

Lamai is the island's second-largest beach town, located south of Chaweng. It has a distinctly more relaxed atmosphere — still well-serviced with restaurants, bars, and shops, but without the intensity of Chaweng.

    • Character: Laid-back, artistic, popular with long-stay visitors and couples. The Sunday night market is one of the island's best.
    • Beaches: Lamai Beach offers excellent swimming and a more local feel. The famous Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks (Hin Ta and Hin Yai) are at the southern end.
    • Dining: Strong mix of authentic Thai food, European restaurants, and beachfront dining. Prices are generally lower than Chaweng.
    • Villas: The hills between Lamai and Chaweng Noi are home to many of our finest villa properties, offering spectacular elevated views of the Gulf.

Lamai is our top recommendation for couples and returning visitors who know the island and prefer a more authentic, unhurried experience.

    The Lamai–Chaweng Corridor

The hillside stretch connecting Lamai and Chaweng — particularly the area around Chaweng Noi and Silver Beach — is where you will find the highest concentration of world-class villas on the island. Elevated plots provide unobstructed sunrise views across the Gulf of Thailand, natural breezes, and a sense of seclusion that beachfront locations rarely match.

Most of our signature properties are located in this corridor, and there is a reason for that: the combination of views, privacy, proximity to amenities, and natural beauty is unrivalled anywhere else on the island.

    The North Coast: Village Charm

    Bophut & Fisherman's Village

Bophut's Fisherman's Village is one of Koh Samui's most charming areas — a narrow street of converted Chinese shophouses now home to boutique restaurants, galleries, and wine bars. The Friday Night Walking Street market is a highlight of any visit to the island.

    • Character: Bohemian, intimate, community-oriented. Popular with European expats and food-focused travellers.
    • Beach: Bophut Beach is calm and family-friendly, with views across to Koh Phangan. Sunsets from here are beautiful.
    • Dining: Some of the island's finest restaurants line Fisherman's Village, including excellent French, Italian, and Thai cuisine.
    • Villas: North coast villas tend to offer sunset views and a quieter pace. The area suits guests who prefer cultural atmosphere over beach-party energy.

    Maenam

Maenam is the quietest of Koh Samui's major beach areas. A long, palm-fringed beach stretches for several kilometres, largely free of development. The village itself has a handful of simple restaurants, a weekly night market, and a genuinely local feel.

    • Character: Peaceful, Thai-village atmosphere, very little tourism infrastructure. Popular with long-stay visitors and digital nomads.
    • Beach: Wide, sandy, and usually deserted. The water is shallow and safe for children.
    • Best for: Guests seeking total tranquillity, writers, remote workers, and visitors on extended stays.
    • Considerations: You will need a car or driver to reach most restaurants and shops. The area can feel isolated for first-time visitors.

The West & South Coast: Sunset Territory

    Lipa Noi & Taling Ngam

The west coast is Koh Samui's sunset side — home to the island's most dramatic evening skies, with views across to the silhouetted peaks of Ang Thong National Marine Park.

    • Character: Quiet, scenic, undeveloped. This is where the island feels most untouched.
    • Beaches: Lipa Noi is the island's best sunset beach — long, shallow, and family-friendly. Taling Ngam offers rugged rocky coastline with dramatic cliff-top dining.
    • Best for: Sunset lovers, photographers, couples seeking romance and isolation.
    • Considerations: The west and south coasts have fewer restaurants, shops, and services. Villa guests typically rely on private chefs and drivers. The proposed Samui Bridge would connect to the mainland at Taling Ngam, potentially transforming this area.

The west coast suits experienced Thailand visitors who prioritise natural beauty and privacy above convenience.

    The South Coast: Quiet Authenticity

The south coast around Hua Thanon and Ban Hua Thanon is Koh Samui's most authentically Thai area. A Muslim fishing village, traditional markets, and temple communities give this stretch a character unlike anywhere else on the island.

    • Character: Rural, traditional, off the beaten track. Very few tourists venture here.
    • Best for: Cultural explorers, photographers, and anyone seeking a side of Koh Samui most visitors never see.
    • Considerations: Limited villa options and almost no tourist infrastructure. Best experienced as a day trip rather than a base.

    Our Recommendation

For most villa guests — especially first-time visitors — we recommend the east coast between Lamai and Chaweng. The combination of stunning hillside villas, morning Gulf sunrises, excellent beaches, and easy access to restaurants, shopping, and medical facilities makes this the most complete area on the island.

Within that corridor, Chaweng Noi is ideal for guests who want convenience and beach access, while Lamai suits those who prefer a more relaxed, authentic atmosphere. The hillside between the two offers the finest views and the most impressive villa estates.

That said, every part of Koh Samui has its own magic. If you have visited before and know what you want — a sunset villa on the west coast, a village retreat in Bophut, or total seclusion in Maenam — we can match you with the right property for your vision.
